WHY DO YOUNG ATHLETES NEED TO
WARM UP?
By: Coach Pete
 |

"Coach Pete
with Omega Speed Training
has helped me grow as an athlete. The speed training
programs, and speed training camps were awesome! In the strength and
conditioning programs that were given by Omega
Speed Training - I have seen a
ton of improvement in a short period of time.
Omega Speed Training workouts are the best and I look forward to
coming to the gym to workout because I know the
workout I am now doing is getting big results.
I can't thank Coach Pete with Omega Speed
Training enough, he knows his
stuff when it comes to speed training and knows how to work with a variety of
people. He is the man - thanks Coach
Pete!"

Why Do Young Athletes Need To Warm Up?
The warmup prepares the young athlete for
maximal intensity. Preparing for participation
in any sport is accepted as being essential for
improving performance. The young athlete should
be able to begin the game or practice totally
ready to perform at a higher intensity. The
dynamic warmup transitions the young athlete
from rest to high intensity exercise over a
short amount of time and over the long run,
being able to train at higher intensities leads
to greater increases in performance.
The warmup prevents injuries in the young
athlete. The injury
prevention aspect of a dynamic warmup routine
has been well
publicized.
A well designed dynamic warmup has physiological
benefits; which plays a significant role on
physical performance. There are numerous
physiological mechanisms involved in the process
of warming up which are believed to enhance
physical performance.
First, the warmup increases the young athlete's
core temperature by 1 to 2 degrees. The
mechanical efficiency of contracting muscles
improves with an increase in muscle temperature;
muscle contractions are also more rapid and
forceful when the muscle temperature is slightly
elevated above normal body temperature.
Second, the dynamic warmup routine increases
heart rate and blood flow to the young athlete's
muscles, improves oxygen uptake, removes carbon
dioxide and lactic acid in the young athlete's
body, increases activation of the central
nervous system, improves coordination, skill
accuracy and reaction time, improves the young
athlete's concentration, increases the
suppleness of the young athlete's connective
tissue, increases contractile efficiency,
increases isometric strength and dynamic
strength and decreases the incidence of muscle,
tendon and ligament injuries.
Finally, research concludes that dynamic warmup
routines conducted before an athletic event will
prepare the young athlete for sports or
activities which demand complex movements and
control of intricate movements occurring in
fractions of a second. The concept or phenomenon
of “Treppe” occurs when a muscle contracts more
forcefully after it has contracted a few times
than when it first contracts. This is due to the
fact that active muscles require decreasing
degrees of succeeding stimuli to elicit maximal
contractions.
