INCREASING AN ATHLETES SPEED ALSO REQUIRES
RESISTANCE TRAINING!

"Coach Pete
with Omega Speed Training
has helped me grow as an athlete. The speed training
programs, and speed training camps were awesome! In the strength and
conditioning programs that were given by Omega
Speed Training - I have seen a
ton of improvement in a short period of time.
Omega Speed Training workouts are the best and I look forward to
coming to the gym to workout because I know the
workout I am now doing is getting big results.
I can't thank Coach Pete with Omega Speed
Training enough, he knows his
stuff when it comes to speed training and knows how to work with a variety of
people. He is the man - thanks Coach
Pete!"

As a Speed
Coach why would I be interested in an athletes strength
and power? Because increasing an athletes speed
takes much more than just working on running form and
completing specific technique drills, agility ladder
drills or cone drills that you can procure from the
latest video. In order to increase in speed, you
must increase your stride frequency
and increase your stride length. Stride frequency
is the number of steps you take and stride length is the
distance your hips travel in a stride.
Increasing your stride length and stride frequency are directly related to
increases in strength and then turning that strength
into power. The more power an athlete is able to
generate by pushing off the ground the longer they will
be able to drive their lead foot forward to gain ground.
It is important to understand that stride length and
stride frequency are directly related to strength.
It is impossible to increase speed by trying to increase
stride length with longer steps and it is impossible to
increase stride frequency by taking quicker and shorter
steps - it is not only impossible but it actually makes
the athlete slower!
It is important to understand that an athletes increase
in stride length and stride frequency are directly
related to the amount of optimal force they apply to the
ground (STRENGTH)! The better strength application
the faster the speed. Acceleration is a form of
strength training and resistance training is crucial
towards the development of strength.
As a speed coach I focus a tremendous amount of my
training on core lifts that target the main muscle
groups used in speed , agility and quickness specific to
the desired sport. Strength and power make the
difference when it comes to acceleration in sports. Not
only is acceleration increased, but
balanced muscular strength optimizes overall performance and
prevents injury.
Strength is developed through resistance training.
Why resistance training? Many coaches do not think
that resistance (strength) training is important for
speed. After all, they reason, the muscle gains and
power produced by resistance training is not specific to
speed. However the truth is that the basic
elements of SPEED, AGILITY, MOBILITY, QUICKNESS and
ENDURANCE are all functions of muscular strength.
Still their are some coaches that understand the value
of resistance training and incorporate a resistance
training routine into their overall program, however
many of these coaches do not fully understand the
process by which resistance training contributes
specifically to speed performance and without this
knowledge their resistance training programs are at best
general, inferior and miss the mark for bringing out
their athletes full potential.
It is important to create and adhere to a program that
will develop the athletes speed through resistance
training. Without integrating an efficient and
effective pillar strength and power output program,
athletes can't expect to increase in peak velocity
movements. By following my resistance
training programs and following them with consistency,
you will find yourself ahead of the competition!
A big smile to you.
